Melee » Modes

Yes, you remember them as Stock or Time from Smash Bros. 64, but in Melee there are many more. Many thanks to Archon!

Multiplayer

Stock
This is the one you remember the most. The one I grew up and learned my family values on. You get to choose how many lives you get during a fight, and you lose when all of them are gone. You can choose for a free-for-all, or a team battle.

Time
Although we don't have any pictures as of yet, it's precisely like the original. You set the time at free-for-all or team, and when time runs out, the person with the highest score wins.

Custom or Mini-Modes
These modes are gonna be grouped together because they are special settings that can be add-on features to stock, time, and most likely coin.

Camera Mode: One of the players is a Camera Control, with which you can take in-game screenshots.

Stamina Mode: I love this new kind, but for those who don't, they made a normal HP mode. When someone looses all their HP, they're out cold.

Super Sudden Death:This mode can now be played immediately by popular demand. All players start off with 300% damage.

Giant Melee: All character's are about twice they're size. Lovers of Giant DK may now commence drooling.

Tiny Melee: All character are about the size of rats and have high pitched voices.

Invisible Melee: All players basically have a cloaking device on that doesn't wear out.

Fixed Camera Mode: The camera zooms out to the maximum the entire fight.

Single Button Mode: Characters can only move, jump, and use A attacks.

Lightning Melee: Gameplay is much faster than normal.

Slo-Mo Melee: Gameplay is much slower than normal.

Coin Mode
This is one of the newest features in the game. You remember how crazy a game can get if you're all running for the same item, right? Well imagine that feeling throughout the entire fight! In this mode, whenever you hit someone, coins come out equal to the amount of damage you inflicted. However, this number doesn't decrease the number of coins that the person that got hit has, so say if I had 50 coins and lost 25% damage, 25 coins would come out of me, but my total would luckily still read 50.However, if you are KOed, you lose half your coins! Golden coins are worth 10, silver are worth 5, and bronze are worth 1.

Tournament Mode
This would be the mode that kids could make some quick cash on. A kid could sell tickets to this thing! In this mode, it's basically an organized tournament with brackets and all. For the counting types reading this, you may see in that image that there are 64 spaces for players. This would mean that up to 64 people can play in this mode at once!

Bonus Mode
In this mode, you need not concern yourself with accumulating damage. This mode gives you points for impressive combos and strategy. Novices should steer clear of this mode for awhile. I've been waiting for a mode like this for some time. Those who have played SSB and feel enraged when you're doing terrific and suddenly the crate you struck explodes, this is for you most definitely. It may seem complicated, but for the most part it's just like getting those extra bonuses in 1P mode in SSB.

Single Player

Classic
As you may guess, this is much like the original 1P mode from SSB. You go through a series of battles with a given amount of lives. Unlike the original, most of the elements of this mode are random. The battles go like this:

  • A random battle.

  • A random team battle in which you get a partner and fight two opponents.

  • Break the Targets! Each character gets a different set of obstacles to complete and break 10 targets in a limited time.

  • A random battle.

  • A random giant battle in which you get two partners and fight a giant opponent.

  • Snag the trophies! Three trophies fall from the sky, and to get them, you have to hit them onto a platform before they fall too far.

  • A random battle.

  • A battle against a random team of identical characters.

  • A strange variation to race to the finish. There are many finish gates, but the farther into the maze you go in the time given, the more coins for the lottery you get. There is one trophy hidden somewhere in the maze.

  • A random battle against a metal opponent.

  • The Master hand!

    Adventure
This is a new 1P mode. It has some Classic style battling mixed in with side scrolling tasks. I personally think they could have done more side scrolling, but oh well.

  • Level 1:Mushroom Kingdom
You start out fighting various groups of Goombas and Koopas, and will eventually find the Yoshi team on a tall island. They're easy. After that, work your way through some more Goombas and Koopas and make your way to the finish. It then moves on to a battle between you and Mario and Peach as a team. If you finished the first half with a 2 on the clock, Luigi will take Mario's place.

  • Level 2:Kongo Jungle
The first battle is against you and two tiny DKs at Kongo Jungle. After that, you fight the infamous Giant DK at the Jungle Garden.

  • Level 3:Underground Maze
As the name suggests, you go through a series of jumping, running, and beating up Re-deads, Octoroks, and Like-Likes. There are five separate areas where you get the chance to fight a link. There is a 1/5 chance that you will find the Triforce in one of these areas, which marks the finish line. Keep in mind it's always random. After that, you fight Zelda at the Temple.

  • Level 4:Brinstar
Start off by fighting Samus at Brinstar. After that, you must go through a series of jumping onto platforms until you get to the escape pods, since the planet apparently explodes thirty seconds after you start jumping.

  • Level 5:Green Greens
Begin by fighting Kirby. Simple, right? Then, you fight 15 kirbys, each of them with the power of another character, be it a secret you've unlocked or default. If you do well enough in these two battles, you'll fight Giant Kirby.

  • Level 6:Corneria
Start by KOing Fox. Then, if you've unlocked Falco, you have a 50/50 chance of fighting or Fox. If you haven't yet, you just fight Fox no matter what. Either way, All three Arwings are going crazy this time round and blasting anything that moves.

  • Level 7:Pokemon Stadium
Depending on if you've unlocked them, you fight a team of Pikachus, Pichus, and Jigglypuffs, and the only item you get to use is a pokeball.

  • Level 8:Mute City
You start by running along a length of track with the cars occasionally buzzing by. Head for a platform when that happens. After that, defeat C. Falcon at Mute City.

  • Level 9:Onet
Defeat three Nesses with only Mr. Saturns as items. Simple.

  • Level 10:Infinite Glacier
Keep going up at an increasing fast pace for an amount of time, all the while avoiding Topis and Polar Bears, then fight two pairs of ice climbers.

  • Level 11:Battlefield
Defeat 15 Wire frame fighters, then, depending on if you've unlocked Luigi, you fight either Metal Mario, or the Metal Bros.

  • Level 12:Final Destination
    Defeat Giant Bowser.

    All Star Mode
All Star Mode is a secret one in which you fight every character in the game, in a randomized order. It is only unlocked once you have obtained all 25 characters. The first four rounds you fight against 1 character. The next 4, is a 2v1 battle. The next four, a 3v1. The final battle is you against a team of Mr. Game and Watches. The last one is always Mr. Game and Watch; it isn't randomized. You only get one life to do all of this, and you carry your damage over from round to round. But, you do get three container hearts, which should be used wisely.

    Event Mode
This is a bit of a cross between the first two. A set of 51 Classic style battles, but some of them require you to fight as a certain character. They aren't all available at the start, but as you get more secret characters, you get more events to complete.

    The Stadium
The coliseum offers three different challenges you can try with any character. There's Multi-man Melee, in which you fight the wire frames. You can choose between 15 man, 100 man, 3 minute, 15 minute, endless, or Cruel Mode, where you fight them with no time limit and no items. Break the targets allows you to try the first bonus round of Classic mode without all the riffraff. Homerun derby is quite unique. You get 10 seconds to inflict damage on a sandbag-like enemy, and then with the help of a nearby homerun bat, blast him as far as you can.

    Training mode
This one is back from the original, but with some added perks. You can now have more than one opponent. You can also get more advanced character stats.

    Lottery Mode
This is also a new mode, but it doesn't involve any real battling. However, what it does do is almost something better. Whenever you win moolah in Coin mode or Classic mode, it's put in an account you have. You can spend these coins in a slot machine to win special trophies. The more coins you put in, the better chance you have of winning one. These trophies are actual Nintendo characters. There are so many that it is pretty much a library of all things Nintendo from Balloon Kid to Onix to Paperboy. With these trophies comes a fairly large bio on the character and the list of games it has appeared in. The shots you see here are a mere glimpse of what you can get.
